Artwork 1 (Shu Hui)
Eye Desire Ooi Shu Hui Collage (magazine, felt, ribbon, glitter, coloured paper, cellophane paper) 2010 In the center, a pupil filled with a collage of multi-coloured rectangular magazine cutoutsis surrounded by a silver glittery iris. Emanating from the eye are brilliant yellow and golden light rays of five different textures- yellow felt, golden patterned ribbon, golden coloured paper, light golden ribbon and yellow cellophane paper. What the person of the eye sees is reflected in the colourful pupil. She wishes for many great dfesires and hopes; she dreams of a lot of wonderful things that everyone would also like to have. This shows that it is only human nature to dream, be it daydreaming or dreaming in our sleep. Humans have desires, are greedy, but this is all perfectly normal, for no one is perfect. Dreaming may be regarded as a useless activity, for people just think in their minds about stuff that may not come true. However, we should embrace the freedom and imagination of our brains. In the infinite vastness of them ind, we can explore countless "colourful" things- bright, spectacular, out-of-the-world, interesting and even crazy. The list just goes on, for the power of dreaming is just so...immensely powerful. Coupled with the glitter, the eye looks full of hope and appears very bright, both literally and figuratively. The light rays beaming out in all directions reflect the effect of dreams on the surroundings. With dreams, we change the environment, influence people around us, and make a better world.
