Take-off Li Yuqi Photography 2008This picture depicts part of the themepark on the Genting Highlands. The colours in this picture all mostly bright and warm, like bright yellow, orange and red. Therefore, the picture displays a happy mood. The Playground(that whole machinery, I don't know what it is called) goes in a circular motion, thus giving the whole picture a sense of motion.
This "playground" keeps the people "onboard" turning, giving them to chance to soar in the sky! This picture was taken when I was also onboard, and we were just preparing to "take off"from the ground and soar high. This can be related to our lives too, many wonderful things happen, and they all have a---start (a take off). With this take off, we can soar up high, pass everything with flying colours.

Do You Like Apple? Li Yuqi Photography 2008Everyone has a dream, and we work hard to persue our dreams. Some people thinks that their dreams are impossible to achieve, while others who fulfiled their dreams, feel that they can achive something greater than expected. So what is dream? is it something that make us happy? or is it something that we are achieving for the sake of showing people that you can achieve whatever you want?
Tha background of the photo is a piece of congrate floor, with bunches of dried branches tieing together, leaning against the wall. The middle ground shows a boy walking across, while the foreground shows a little boy holding a green apple, seems like he is asking you "Do you like apple?"
The green apple shows contrast with the boy's dull colour winter wear. The purpose of the photo is to convey a message that dreams & goals =/= materialistic things. we should not work too hard to achieve things like more salary, bigger houses, better cars, we should try to lead a healthier lifestyle, more sleep, happier life.

Fly Li Yuqi Crayon and colour pencils on paper 2007 This painting shows some colourful balloons flying high up in the sky. The balloons have generally bright and warm colours like red and orange, while some complementary colours like red and green, were put together randomly. These balloons were distributed with unbalanced composition. However, as there's no focal point, viewer's eyes move from left to right in the circle.
The crayons were applied in quick and swift manner as choppy, visible brushworks could be seen. For the background, bright colours like yellow, orange and light green were used, together with bold outlines, instead of the usual blue sky and white clouds.
This subject matter is about freedom and dreams, though the balloons seem like flying in the sky freely, but it is actually controlled by strings, this indirectly suggests that dreams are hard to achieve. The strings also shows that we should always learn to grab opportunities in order to succeed.

Azure Xun Zhongxin Oil on Canvas 2009 This is a landscape painting of a large lake. Blues and greens dominate this painting, especially a rich azure blue depicting the lake. The colours are naturalistic and so is the subject matter. In the foreground, there is the lake wile the forest and sky are in the middle ground and background respectively. Short, choppy strokes form the water of the lake, but when viewed from the colours merge in the viewer’s eyes, forming a smooth surface. Short, choppy strokes in white also form the reflections in the water caused by the clouds in the sky. On the right side of the painting, the trees on land cast dark shadows onto grass; the bright grass contrasts strongly with the dark shadows, thus giving the feeling that sunlight is very strong. The painting is has a balanced composition and the forms are modeled such that they do not appear to be flat on the surface of the canvas, thus making the scenery look realistic. This way, there is a sense of layering and depth, separating the foreground, middle and background clearly. In this painting, ‘dream’ is also interpreted very literally, as this is a setting of a dream of the artist. This beautiful scenery takes you away momentarily from reality, sucking you into the land of fantasy.

Still life: Figure Xun Zhongxin Pencil Sketch on Paper 2010 These are still life sketches of the head statue of Lorenzo De Medici, which I borrowed from my teacher. Lorenzo De Medici was a man with big dreams; at twenty, he assumed a leading role in Italy, following the death of his father. Like his grandfather, he pursued a policy of peace in the country and also drove out other European powers, therefore, Florence flourished under his rule. The first sketch shows Medici’s profile, with his face directly facing the light, thus casting shadows at the side of the face. His nose is beautiful and well defined, and he seemed to be smiling while looking far away with his empty eyes. In this sketch, he seems to be full of hope and happiness. The second sketch shows a top down view from the right side of Medici, though in the picture he appears to be sad, with his downcast eyes and mouth. His strong jaw line is more clearly defined in this sketch, and he is again facing the light, therefore casting shadows on the side and back of his head, and also the curls of his hair. These two sketches is a perfect example of how differently things will appear if we view them from different angles, and how things may not always be how we perceive it to be at first sight.

Still life: Flowers Xun Zhongxin Oil on Canvas 2010 This painting depicts flowers in a glass cup, seemingly too small for them. These flowers represent our dreams, and the dark, glass cup represent restriction. This symbolizes that as long as we have dreams, nothing can restrict us. The flowers are set against an orange background, and the surface that the cup rests on is multi-coloured, making this painting even more colourful. The sunflower faces the viewer directly; it represents hope and happiness, blooming from a dark area. The red flower is passion, which we must have in order to pursue our dreams. Lastly, the white lilies represent innocence and purity, which comes together with hope and happiness. This painting is mostly done in warm, rich tones such as rich and orange, and is symmetrical, as the flowers are right in the middle of the painting. The background of the painting is not entirely done in one tone of colour, the colour has some variation, thus the painting does not appear too flat.
|
Oasis Xun Zhongxin Oil on Canvas 2010 The painting depicts an oasis in the middle of a desert. In the foreground, there is a pond, with four ducks swimming in it. There are many trees, both tall and short surrounding the pond. The leaves of some trees are turning orange, indicating that autumn is drawing near. At the left of the painting, half hidden among the foliage, there is a small red house. I fantasize it to be my house, where I can go to, to escape the harsh reality of life. Beyond the oasis, there are mountains, which is the desert, there is still some vegetation growing, symbolizing that although the real world is harsh, there is still some happiness. This painting is very colourful, and is not distinctively dominated by either cold or warm colours. The leaves of the trees are drawn by dab of paint, making it less 2-dimensional. The brushstrokes of the pond are applied in swirling motions, thus creating ripples in the water. The painting symbolizes a peaceful and pleasant place right in the middle of a troubled and hectic area. Compared to the hustle and bustle in a big city, life in the country is much more simple and carefree, and I think that feeling inspired me to paint this painting. It is of the said that our dreams reflect our inner desires and hopes. In this case, I think my wish was to have a more simple life, so that I will be able to do things at my own pace.

Xun Zhongxin Clay, Silica paint
2010 This is a 3-dimensional model that I made during art class this year. It is made of clay and painted using silica paint. The head of the model is made out of a pinch pot and the body is carved out of a piece of clay. The reason I did not use a pinch pot for the body is because I found the piece of clay much easier to shape and manipulate than a pinch pot. The inside of the body is also hollow, and the head and body are attached together using slit, so is the tail of the cat and its ears. The clay figure is an alien cat, with large, black-rimmed red eyes and ears with two points. Its tail is curled to the front and the tip is painted red too. The rest of the cat is painted orange, but after firing, the colour came out quite translucent, just as I wanted it to. I did this by first painting on a base coat of white, and then after it dried I painted on another light coat of orange. The light colouring of the coat of the cat also draws attention to its eyes, as the colour of the eyes is very opaque and easily stands out. This worked was supposed for us to use our imagination to create a “wild thing”, thus the possibilities are endless! I transformed a normal cat that we can see in our daily lives, giving it an alien feel and making it seem more “extraordinary”. Overall, this figure is still very simple, with no ornaments, and this, perhaps will be its charm.

Monster in DisguiseOoi Shu Hui Clay, Silica paint 2010
This bright and colourful clay figurine is a creature formed by the combination of hamster ears, amermaid tail, octopus tentacles, wings and a wave. On its head, it has a baby blue wave-shaped "hairstyle". A little lower beside it are large dark brown hamster-like ears. Hanging on one ear is a golden yellow earring and the other ear has cotton wool around it. Its pointed and slanty eyes are black, white and red for the center. Its mouth is shaped in and "O" and it appears astonished and frightening. Its lower body is green with criss-cross scales and it has a pair of red wings on its back, decorated with cotton wool and designs drawn on with a black marker pen. In addition, there are a few weird protrusions on its back. By its side are two tentacles like octopus ones with swirl patterns. Last but not least, its body is a cheerful yellow, unlike typical monsters which are usually scary colours like black.
This monster, Zazz, represents the crazy and wild imagination of young children. Usually, children's dreams would include childish elements like monsters, creatures and adventures. I was no exception. Their pure and childlike innocence is clearly reflected in their thinking and imagination. It also shows their simple-mindedness and carefree personality. These are actually the "pure dreams", as they are filled with true happiness and fun, and they are the most valuable. Childhood innocence is priceless, once lost, we can only dream about it...

Grandparents' Love- A DreamOoi Shu Hui Photoshopped image 2010
This is the engagement photo of my maternal grandparents taken in around 1958, which I edited in photo-editing software Photoshop.
The blissful couple has faint smiles playing on their lips as they look into the distance. Evidently, they come from an older era as displayed in their clothing and hairstyles. However, they still manage to come across as a pair of cool and confident lovers. The lady has short hair and is wearing a simple dress with prints. Her fiancé dons a smart suit paired with an olden printed tie and looks handsome.
The dreamy background is made up of mostly warm colours- orange being the dominant colour- with the exception of a tinge of purple and pink towards the right, near the gentleman's left shoulder. One can spot a few faint images of cloud-like patterns mixed with the background. To enhance the dreamy lovey-dovey atmosphere, there is a grunge photo frame enclosing this beautiful shot of the couple which is tilted to the right.
The pure and beautiful love this olden-day couple shares is now harder to find in our modernised and liberal society. In the past, marriage was for life, where they would stick together through thick and thin and overcome all challenges of life. Sad to say, such scenarios are not as common anymore and may continue to slowly dwindle away in the future.
Has society and life become too complex? Where had the love gone? Will such pure love be only a thing of the past? Will it become legends, fairytales, myths, even things that we can only yearn to dream of? If then, I would want to have such a colourful dream...

Smile, BravelyOoi Shu Hui Photoshopped image 2010
In the left foreground, a young girl with a blue jacket smiles cheerfully with a "cheese" sign, her radiant grin showing off two rows of sparkling white teeth. Her shiny black crowning glory. cur in the style of a bob, is complemented with a glossy tan complexion. She is in the midst of Mother Nature- a sunny tropical garden with grass, shrubbery and trees. The bright green foliage makes one feel relaxed and at peace. Indeed, the girl seems to be enjoying herself, as her entire face is lit up with happiness and joy.
However, among all this, it is almost impossible to notice the sneaky white tiger in the right mid-ground crouching behind a bush, well-hidden among the leaves. It has a kind of almost magical feel about it: there is a white glow shining from its body and its body is translucent (one can partially see the plants behind it through its body). Then again, this "magical tiger" is perhaps making use of its "poewrs" as it can camouflage better with its translucent body. One can easily guess that the tiger, which has its eyes fixated on the girl, is most likely planning to have the girl for lunch.
But on another level, the tiger is a symbol for danger. The way it creeps up on the girl before suddenly attacking her is also similar to backstabbers in the School of Hard Knock. We will at some point in our lives realise that, this world is full of danger lurking in every possible corner, and sometimes, even in the open.
The ecstatic girl is another symbol, for positivity and optimism. When faced with obstacles in our lives, we should not give up on ourselves. On the contrary, facing it with a positive attitude can make things totally different. It's all in the attitude and mindset.
The trees, on the other hand, represent sanctuary. Even though the journey in life can be difficult, we will usually have someone we can lean on, someone to encourage us on, to pick us up, to help us.
If everyone in this world can have a positive attitude towards life and the adversities it brings along, there would be less suicides, chaos and disasters, Unfortunately, that may only be a dream...oh, what a colourful dream it would be. Perhaps until then, the least we can do is to smile more, even if we are going to be eaten by a tiger...
Anyway, as the saying goes, "When the going gets tough, the tough gets going."

What are...dreams? Ooi Shu Hui
Plastic strings on black paper 2010
The silver-outlined brain in the middle of the black square paper is filled with tangled-up plastic strings of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink- and assortment of bright colours. Seems simple...or is it?
The randomly tangled strings represent the state of mind the brain is in when a person dreams in his sleep- confusing, for no one can really understand what dreams actually are. They are colourful, as dreams are extremely varied. They seem so endless, with no limits. The black background represents the literal darkness one is in when sleeping. The eyes are closed, but yet the brain is not, Despite being "surrounded by darkness", as no images are being seen by the eyes, a person can still enter fantasy worlds and experience impossible things. Isn't that fascinating?
Dreams have always remained a mystery to mankind, yet it is something that is in a way "in our bodies". It is unlike other mysteries unknowns like outer space. Why is something so seemingly uncomplicated so complex? Even though the human brain has made numerous amazing discoveries, we still cannot figure out what dreams actually are, although a few theories has been presented.
Have you ever wondered what dreams are? Have you ever pondered why we have dreams? Have you ever...the list is infinite, just like dreams. As you stare into the tangled brain, try to guess what's in there. A dream about being Santa Claus or being able to fly? It's all up to you actually, the possibilities are uncountable. For that, is the colourful wonder of dreams.
But perhaps, the mystery that we humans have about our dreams is the very beauty in it. Have a sweet dream tonight!

Eye Desire Ooi Shu Hui Collage (magazine, felt, ribbon, glitter, coloured paper, cellophane paper) 2010
In the center, a pupil filled with a collage of multi-coloured rectangular magazine cutoutsis surrounded by a silver glittery iris. Emanating from the eye are brilliant yellow and golden light rays of five different textures- yellow felt, golden patterned ribbon, golden coloured paper, light golden ribbon and yellow cellophane paper.
What the person of the eye sees is reflected in the colourful pupil. She wishes for many great dfesires and hopes; she dreams of a lot of wonderful things that everyone would also like to have. This shows that it is only human nature to dream, be it daydreaming or dreaming in our sleep. Humans have desires, are greedy, but this is all perfectly normal, for no one is perfect. Dreaming may be regarded as a useless activity, for people just think in their minds about stuff that may not come true. However, we should embrace the freedom and imagination of our brains. In the infinite vastness of them ind, we can explore countless "colourful" things- bright, spectacular, out-of-the-world, interesting and even crazy. The list just goes on, for the power of dreaming is just so...immensely powerful.
Coupled with the glitter, the eye looks full of hope and appears very bright, both literally and figuratively. The light rays beaming out in all directions reflect the effect of dreams on the surroundings. With dreams, we change the environment, influence people around us, and make a better world.

Cartoon Character Design---Bubee and Friend Wang Xinge Poster colour with black marker outlines 2009
This artwork was an assignment in 2009. It consists of 6 small sized pictures which depict 6 different mindsets/things observed in Singapore. Bubee is the ladybird in the pictures while the other creature is her friend. The 6 things observed in Singapore are depicted through their own "adventures". Being Number One: This picture is coloured with warm and bright colours and thus has a happy mood. The picture depicts a little "creature" holding an examination paper with the results initially stated as 1/20, but changed to "position: 1". this suggests that everyone can be first in their own way. Great Foresight: The mother of Bubee painted in black suggests complete dominance over Bubee, her daughter. This picture depicts Bubee foreseeing her mother beating her up due to poor results, and indeed she has great foresight like many students do. We Are Big-hearted: This picture shows Bubee and her friend donating their toys to "children of Africa". This shows that even children can be big-hearted in charity, so are adults in today's society. We Love Food: The picture is painted in bright colours. Grass land, blue sky and white fluffy clouds were also painted in the background. This picture depicts a giving Bubee (its friend) a few hundred dollars in exchange of a tasty lollipop. This shows that people nowadays love food. We Feel For Other Singaporeans: The background is painted with much care to create the watery effect of a rainy day. This picture shows that "people" do care for one another these days, and especially towards those in need. Two healthy kids are helping an old "person" with her walking in the rain. Law Abiding: There is an irony shown in this picture as it shows that when a restaurant does not allow smoking, people DO abide to it. However, in exchange to their law abiding, people DO NOT even go into the restaurant to eat. They find other places where smoking is allowed.

Front View The Wild Thing---Ice-cream Monster Wang Xinge Clay, silica paint 2010This is a "wild thing" made from clay. I want my wild thing to look cute instead of scary or gory, thus I have its body shaped like a bear's, its ears like a lop-ear rabbit's. The two little horns on the head resembles the horns of small lambs. Its round body shape makes it look chubby like a lovable soft toy. Its tail is the essential part of this model and it took the longest time to craft. the white thick tail is made by swirling the clay into a shape that resembles the ice-cream in a cone. The pink lining on it adds a "sweet taste" to it. The wild thing is painted in dark brown colour, which is also the colour of dark chocolate. This gives the wild thing a sweet look, and it also makes it look like a tasty chocolate flavoured ice-cream. The paint applied was not well blended throughout the whole body of the model, such that the colours are not solid. Instead, the different intensity of the colours on the model gives it a soft and feathery look, making it look like a soft toy. The Clay model is made out of two pinch pots stick together by glue, because they were cut into two parts at the neck when it was first sent to burn in a whole piece. however, I am glad that it still turned out well and it is one whole piece together now. I want my imaginary "wild thing" to not have any special powers, but to live happily in the wild with other cute creatures. It would bounce its way through everything in life and live in a dream world full of happiness and no disasters, sadness or pain...

Dance a Dream Wang Xinge Watercolour on paper 2010
This painting depicts two ballerinas dancing with elegance. The two ballerinas have realistic body features. It can be seen that the ballerina on the left side wears darker coloured clothes and appears poor, while the ballerina at the right side wears a beautiful ballet dress and appears to be a professional performer. The background is misty and is made up of blue and pink on the left and right side of the painting respectively. These two shades colours are merged well in the middle of the painting and thus creates a smooth effect. The colours used in this painting are mostly cool, with big areas of white, blue and light pink.
The brushstrokes are not obvious in most parts of the painting. The figures are realistic as their forms are very carefully modeled and in the right proportion. The depiction of light appears to come from many light sources. The absence of a shadow that falls on the ground suggests that there is no floor or wall in this painting. However, the soft shadows that falls on the figures suggests that they are still real people dancing despite the absence of floor and walls in the painting.
The ballerinas on both sides are contrasting each other; one in dark coloured and drab dressings and the other in light coloured and beautiful dressings. Their appearance depicts their difference in their everyday life and wealth. The dull blue and pink background suggests a contrast in the ballerinas too. However, the painter is trying to say that even though the two ballerinas are different in many ways, they share a common dream. That is to be a great dancer. With this goal, both of them are linked together and they have the same temperament, elegance and confidence in dancing. They are no longer different in their everyday life or wealth as suggested just by their dressings, even if they still are different, the same dream makes them the same and leads them both to success. The artist wants to suggest that everyone and anyone can dream, and only with a dream will anyone succeed. With a dream, rich or poor, everyone is the same.

Autumn Tree Wang Xinge Watercolour on paper 2010
This is a landscape painting of a place during Autumn. The subject matter is the maple tree , with a tire swing attached to it. The colours used are naturalistic. The colours of the tree on the left side are mainly warm with bigger areas of red and orange, while the right side is made up of mostly cool colours like yellow and light green, with less shades of red. The brushwork in this painting is generally fine and not obvious. The leaves of the tree are painted carelessly with dabs of paint sized differently. The other parts of the painting are generally painted with fine brushstrokes. The middle ground with the subject matters are painted with great details. However, the fore ground and back ground are painted in a way to create misty effect,, so that the painting looks mystical and dreamy. The forms of the wooden railings and the tree are carefully modeled and the depiction of light appears to come from many light sources. The objects in the painting are arranged in a balanced composition, with the big tree in the middle and a row of wooden railings behind it that stretches across the picture. The tire swing resembles aspiration. A swing can "fly" up high there but never loses it's direction. This is therefore like a person with aspiration or dream; no matter how far the person "flies" he never loses his direction in life. To me, this scene also resembles a place in a fairytale. It communicates a sense mystical and serene feeling. This is my dreamland...

Following your heart and dream Wang Xinge Pencil drawing on paper 2009The subject matter of this picture is the girl standing on the middle of the pavement. The girl is wearing a coat, facing the viewers with a slight grin. There are also a suitcase and a young tree that attracts the viewers’ attention. The figure is sketched with fast strokes. The facial features of the figure are drawn with fine lines while the other parts of the body are sketched with rougher lines. The suitcase is drawn swiftly and shaded lightly. The tree is comparably messier in lines especially the leaves, which are made up of fast shadings of different directions and swirling lines to create the effect of leaves. The girl with a suitcase facing the viewers suggests that the viewers are actually her “parents” and she is now leaving parents to soar greater heights with a dream. Her slight grin but weary eyes suggest that she is excited about her future, yet sad and cannot bear to leave her home and family. The pavement that she is standing on has no destination or an end in view. therefore, it also meant that her future has no limit and is for her to decide what she wants in the future. The young tree represents the girl’s heart in this context. It means that no matter how far away a she is from her parents, her heart well always be with them. Children have to follow their dreams and leave their parents one day, but their hearts will always remain at home. All the sweat and tears, happiness and bitterness are treasures a dream brings. These feelings are the colours of a dream…
